Cadence

We designed an ecosystem to facilitate healthy communication of emotions between family members in a multi-generational household. This is a speculative project set in the year 2040. I worked on the secondary research, identifying the problems of the future, ideation, creating brand guidelines and the final UI for the ecosystem.

Context

US population in multigenerational households has quadrupled since 1971. 66% of those living in a multigenerational household say the economic climate was a factor in their family becoming a multigenerational household.

We see this trend continuing to grow as cost of living increases in major cities and adult children have to take on care giving responsibilities.

A third of U.S. adults in multigenerational households say caregiving is a major reason for their living arrangement, including 25% who cite adult caregiving and 12% who cite child care.

How might we facilitate the healthy communication of emotions between family members in a multi-generational household?

Goal

Enabling cohabitants identify and communicate emotions fostering conversation, easing burdens, and streamlining household dynamics.

1

Reduce the friction caused due to communication

2

Reduce the impact of varying communication styles

3

Understand and adapt according to the needs of the household

4

Avoid unhealthy confrontation and openly communication

Final Solution

Introducing Cadence, an ecosystem experience of individual family devices and home devices that allows individuals who cohabitate to not only identify, but communicate their emotional states, we hope to facilitate conversations, alleviate burdens and ultimately streamline complications that busy households find themselves in.

Research

We explored several challenges that may arise in a multigenerational household, such as the division of labor, self-care for the sandwich generation, privacy in shared spaces, and enhancing caregiving dynamics among the different generations.

The US population in multigenerational households has quadrupled since 1971. 66% of those living in a multigenerational household say the economic climate was a factor in their family becoming a multigenerational household (Pew Research, 2022).

We see this trend continuing to grow as cost of living increases in major cities and adult children have to take on caregiving responsibilities.

Value Proposition

In the midst of the booming wellness industry, traditionally centered on individual experiences, we aspire to redefine the narrative by directing attention to the household and family unit. Our goal is to create an innovative experience that empowers cohabitants to identify and communicate their emotional states, fostering meaningful conversations, alleviating burdens, and streamlining the complexities often faced by busy households.

UX Pillars

1

Building a Rhythm of Communication

Once and awhile isn’t enough, that’s why we aim to prompt daily emotional check-ins to build healthy habits.

2

Redundant Document Transfers

Information available at your fingertips (or gaze) when you want it without any disruption.

3

Show over Tell

We lean into a abstract visual language to strip away unnecessary verbiage.

4

Opposite of Everything, Everywhere All at Once

We aim to decrease the amount of stimulation that occurs in crowded living space.

Building a Rhythm of Identifying and Communicating Emotions in a Multi-generational Household with the help of Cadence. Log in your emotions daily to let your family members know how much energy you would require from the household. With AI technology Cadence will then map the energy profile of the house to help understand and communicate feelings in a healthy manner.

Step 1 Input your emotions

There’s two ways to input emotions into Cadence — touch and talk.
After a simple splash screen, the user gets an option to pick between Touch and Talk. After inputting their emotion the app creates a visual representation of their emotions called a Cadence.

Touch

Once the user clicks on touch the screen shifts to the default neutral emotion. Swiping left and right changes the emotion and swiping up and down increases and decreases the intensity of the emotion. The user has the options to input as many emotions as they want, we understand that feeling are not black and white (haha, see what we did there) they come in multiple complicated permutations and combinations.

Talk

Clicking on the talk button activates the microphone letting the user input their feelings, they can talk about how they are feeling and the AI will create a visual based on their input.

Step 2 Individuals Cadences get added to the Family Cadence

As and when a family member inputs their emotion, the family Cadence is created. The Family Cadence is available on the app, on the widget of the app and any family IoT devices that are connected to the app

2. The Referral Process from the Representative Room

The referral process starts in the client's room, allowing reps to select the organization, specify required documents, and add notes for the next case worker.

Step 3 Final Family Cadence

Once all family members have added their individual Cadences the Family Cadence is created and all members of the family are alerted about the final Family Cadence that is created. Family members are also notified when another member updates their individual Cadence.

Stephen Mayer, a Salt Lake City native, was nurtured in the publishing world by his magazine-running father and developed a fascination for fonts upon receiving a Mac for his family. During his collegiate years, he skipped lectures and gained knowledge about typeface—and life—by working as a designer for his university newspaper.

He also worked independently as a consultant, bridging the gap between typeface creators and users, always championing the needs of both parties. Not only is he the co-founder of the web platforms, Typographica and Fonts In Use, Stephen has also penned a regular column for Print magazine and authored the acclaimed book The Anatomy of Type. In 2017, he became an integral part of the nonprofit library and museum, Letterform Archive, as an Associate Curator and Editorial Director.
